Dutch bobsleigh team quits for lack of confidence
WHISTLER, Canada, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) — The Dutch four-man bobsleigh has decided not to compete due to lack of trust of the pilot Edwin van Calker, said Wednesday the Dutch delegation at the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games.
“This is a personal decision on Edwin’s part”, Dutch team head coach Tom de la Hunty said.
According to him, there’re some factors, including Edwin van Calker’ crash in two-man bobsleigh, the tragic accident in men’s luge and external family pressures, all of which made the pilot lose confidence catalog printing in piloting.
The withdrawal follows a similar decision by the Australian men’s four-man bobsleigh after two of its crew, Duncan Harvey and Duncan Pugh, were both injured in crashes over the last week.
But De la Hunty said the Dutch decision was not prompted by safety concerns.
“This is a safe track. We would not send athletes down the track if it were not,’ he said.
Four-man bobsleigh was taking place Wednesday and Thursday ahead of competition on Friday and Saturday.
